I say we because even though the article states I went through a hard time it’s easy to forget it’s even harder for the one by your side while you’re going through it. My wife is my biggest supporter, she’s the first to tell people about my work, the first to hit “like” on my Facebook page and the first to talk to the Newspapers about me saying “I have a good story for your paper.” I don’t care that I made the paper, I care about how wonderful my wife is and how supportive she is. I don’t care who you are, if you don’t have a solid support system then you’re on borrowed time before you fall. Appreciate the ones who appreciate you, honor them as they do you.

As the write up says I had to undergo Chemotherapy and surgeries for over a year, it was so taxing on me I could not work or even paint. My brain was so taxed it was next to impossible to mix colors, it was the strangest thing! What would normally take me a few days to complete would take me 3 weeks to get half way through it while on Chemo, it was so bad I had to completely walk away from it. What the paper doesn’t say is during this entire time my wife took on the responsibilities of well….EVERYTHING. Our income got cut in half and she worked Mon-Saturday to cover our bills, every Saturday she worked for free so she could take off and go with me for every visit, every Chemo session and surgery. There were times when we only had 20 dollars in our account to last the week, try that sometime when that doesn’t even cover half your gas tank.

During Chemo I got phlebitis in my right arm and let me tell you, there isn’t such a thing as relief when you have that because it’s in your veins. Lori would wake up every time I was in pain to try and make me comfortable, sometimes this would be 3 AM and she’d have to turn around get up in a few hours to head to work. Towards the end of chemo and the main surgery I could not walk or get out of bed, Lori had to do everything for me. It was a very humiliating experience at times and yet Lori wouldn’t blink an eye, she would just help. When I could get around she had to help me from room to room, try doing that with someone over twice your body weight. She’s my hero.

This post isn’t to say oh poor me, look what I went through it’s to honor my wife in the amazing love and support she’s given me. I am the man that I am today because of her, she deserves more than I can give her.

I’ll close with this, you’re never alone in this world. If you stop and actually listen to the ones who support and believe in you, it might surprise you on what you can accomplish. It doesn’t matter what comes at you or what you have to go through, keep pushing forward and keep your thoughts on the ones cheering you on, not the ones trying to trip you.

Recent fantasy/personal work.

Last week when I said that I wouldn’t be doing con sketches of copyrighted characters, I had no idea that the news would get the coverage that it did. But seeing as how I helped poke the hornet’s nest—and having taken the time to read the opinions of readers and other artists—I feel like it would be helpful if I responded to help clarify what’s been happening.

First off, I think that what happened regarding this issue highlighted the BEST of our industry. I’m thrilled with the results, although I don’t find Marvel’s statement reassuring (more on that later). When we learned that Marvel was pursuing the $17,000 from Friedrich, we came to

I write this to not spark a debate or judgement, only to share my personal opinion and experience in hopes of benefiting you and offering insight to people thinking about hiring an artist.

Things you should never ask an Artist to do:
1. Free Work.
Do I really have to explain this one? :) You wouldn’t walk into any other business offering a service and ask for free clothes or a burger right? No, you pay for them without question and they take a lot less creativity, time to make and cost a lot less. Why ask people to work for free on something you couldn’t make yourself? If you believe in your vision, then I suggest find funding for it to

I think it's all amazing! I was wondering what's your favorite media is for your art and which media do you think helps you capture the full feeling that you're conveying?

Thank you, I really appreciate that. Which one is my favorite? Hmm that’s a tough question to answer because each one has their pros and cons. I love the natural textures traditional mediums have and yet I like the zero restrictions with digital. If I had to choose though I would go with digital, I wouldn’t be able to sit next to my wife on the couch and paint or head downtown and paint at a coffee shop with real paint. I guess I could do that with traditional mediums but what a pain! Lori wouldn’t be able to stand the smells from Oils and paint thinners and if I painted downtown I’d have to obtain a license. :)

There are too many pros in working with digital, they really do out weigh the pros with traditional mediums. I know some die hard fans of traditional mediums don’t recognize hand painted artwork done with a tablet but that’s irrelevant, it’s here, it’s the future. My advice to the naysayers, adapt and accept it or get out of the way. :)
I believe all mediums are beneficial though, the things I’ve learned in traditional have helped me with digital and vice versa. Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Using real paint as a color palette for digital

Using real paint as a color palette for digital:
by *stevegoad

So starting out with traditional mediums I have always struggled with the color palette on most of the digital paint programs we use today. I think they’re great as far “picking” colors but in reference to working with real paint vs digital there isn’t a real structure on selecting and mixing. For instance you wouldn’t use solid black for traditional paintings or mix white in with your paint to lighten a color, you would use other colors to mix to get better results. I wont get into color mixing, you can find a wealth of information on this on the net.
The point I’m trying to make is color picking has always been kind of a pain for me, eve

I used acrylic and oils with sizes ranging from 6”x6” to 12”x18”. These were originally going to be an ongoing series of small paintings for a “Daily Painting” blog but I realized I had too much stuff going on to be consistent. I think the idea is to just spend an hour or two a day making mini paintings but personally It’s difficult for me to just call a sketch painting done, I’d rather focus on quality.

The features on this dragon are based on a lot of the statues you see throughout Vietnam.
